5-hidroxitriptofano (5-HTP) Características gerais O 5-HTP é um agente natural que é extraído da semente de uma planta africana, conhecida como “Griffonia Simplicifolia”. O 5-HTP, ao contrário do aminoácido triptofano, atravessa facilmente a barreira hematoencefálica. Como resultado, enquanto apenas três por cento de uma dose oral de triptofano é convertida em serotonina no cérebro, estudos indicam que mais de setenta por cento de uma dose oral de 5-HTP é convertida em serotonina. Como a serotonina é um neurotransmissor que eleva o humor e melhora a qualidade do sono, o 5-HTP tem sido usado em ensaios clínicos para tratar depressão, insônia e outras condições em que um aumento nos níveis de serotonina pode ser desejável.
